I’ll bet you didn’t know that Shipyard is the most popular golf course on Hilton Head Island?

According to Dan Moscar, the General Manager, more than 70,000 people enjoyed a round of golf on Shipyard last year which is a lot even for a 27 hole facility. Dan believes that the reason so many golfers like Shipyard is because of the course design and conditioning. George Cobb and William Byrd, the course architects, used their expertise to create a unique resort course that at one time hosted a Senior PGA Tour event. Good players and local pros both consider Shipyard a very challenging test of golf while higher handicappers are able to enjoy the open fairways and beautiful scenery.

Danny credits the maintenance crew and several pieces of new equipment for the excellent condition of the course. The greens were recently renovated with “Champions” a new strain of dwarf Bermuda grass that has produced a beautiful smooth putting surface. Planned for this year is a green drainage project that will cost close to $100,000 and even further improve the conditions.

Another reason for Shipyard’s popularity could very well be the HOT DOGS at the half way house. If you have the chance to sample one, do not pass it up. The dogs are those big fat quarter pounders that are either steamed or grilled, and after nine holes of golf they really hit the spot. Don’t be discouraged if there is a line at the half way house. Hot dog lovers come from all over the island to taste Hilton Head’s best hot dog.
Finally, another reason for Shipyard’s popularity is because it is hands down the best alligator watching golf course on the Island. On a sunny day you will find several of these prehistoric reptiles, of all different sizes, basking in the warmth of the sun. For golfers it can be a little un nerving to realize that those staring eyes watching them on the tee or putting green are not coming from spectators, but from a gallery of grand daddy gators contemplating dinner.

These are only a few of the reasons that Shipyard is such a popular course. Next time you are on the Island, be sure to give it a try.
